Wyoming Repeals Gun-Free Zones in Most Public Places
Effective July 1, 2025, Wyoming Bill HB0172 will be the law of that state, removing dangerous gun-free zones in K-12 schools, colleges, most public buildings, the state capitol, and most public places.

Gun-free zones are dangerous because research shows that 94% of mass shootings over a 69-year period occurred in “gun-free zones,” locations where signs are posted stating weapons are not allowed to be carried on the property, which only responsible law-abiding citizens abide by and criminals see as magnets for their murderous intent since they know their killing will go unchallenged.

The new law states that anyone lawfully carrying concealed weapons in Wyoming may carry a concealed weapon in the following places:
- Any meeting of a governmental entity
- Any meeting of the legislature or a committee thereof
- Any public airport in areas of the airport where the carrying of concealed weapons is not prohibited or restricted under federal law or federal regulation
- Any public building not otherwise prohibited.

It continues saying, anyone lawfully carrying concealed weapons in Wyoming with a state issued permit may carry a concealed weapon in the following places:
- Any public school, public college or university athletic event taking place on public property that does not sell alcoholic beverages
- Any public elementary or secondary school facility
- Any public college or university facility.

The law allows private property owners to restrict firearms on their private property and it allows governmental entities to still prohibit the open carry, display, or wearing of a firearm in their facilities or on their campuses.

Interestingly, the law states that any person who knowingly prohibits entry to another person for lawfully carrying a concealed weapon into a place authorized by the law when the person would otherwise be permitted entry is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, a fine of not more than $2,000, or both.

Except for isolated rural schools, volunteers or employees of schools who lawfully carry concealed weapons must take an initial course of training comprised of not less than 16 hours of live fire handgun training, and 8 hours of scenario based training using nonlethal training, firearms, and ammunition. And undergo annual firearm qualification and documented recurrent training of not less than 12 hours with an approved instructor.

The new law also stipulates that firearm regulation is the purview of the state legislature, not individual local governments or state agencies.
